Turquoise Raku Vase is designed by ceramic artist Tayfun Küçükcan and produced with 'multiple alternative firing technique'. This unique product is fired using Raku technique together with other techniques such as saggar, pit firing and smoke. The most important feature of these primitive firing techniques is the products are unique and special. Primitive firing techniques are a set of methods based on the direct contact method of the products with fire and smoke. This method is used in traditional pottery in Anatolia; the ceramics are covered with turd, bushes, straw and wood and then burned. Also cooking process can be made with pots are placed in a hole opened in the ground. Among the best known alternative firing techniques can be listed as pit firing, smoke and saggar right, and raku. Pit firing is the original method for “baking” clay. This process is done typically in a hole in the ground, or a pit, pots are placed in the pit and burned. Pit firing is an atmospheric process all of the colors and patterns are derived from the process and what is consume in the fire. Smoke firing is an organic method which utilises the elements of fire, water, air and earth (in the form of clay) in all their infinite variety, producing results which are never quite the same twice. Saggar Firing is the method of creating confined atmospheres within a container or saggar. The saggarcan be made out of anything depending on the type of firing from the traditional refractory clay to newspaper. The unique look of Raku pottery is achieved by utilizing both smoke and fire in the Raku kiln to create an unpredictable and unique style. Firstly the pottery is bisque fired, than glazed and fired in a Raku Kiln followed by enhancement in a reduction chamber. As opposed to normal pottery firing where the wares cool down slowly in the kiln and removed with gloves, Raku ware is removed immediately with tongs.
